The Binnen Skipper app alerts you the moment the official storm-warning lights come on at Lake Chiemsee, Lake Starnberg, the Ammersee, the Tegernsee or the Great Brombachsee. It also offers a nautical chart, wind, water level and water temperature. All safety features are free of charge.

Short version

about 100 words

Orange flashing lights on the shores of Bavaria's lakes warn of strong winds and storms: 40 flashes per minute mean strong wind, 90 mean storm. But only those looking in the right direction see the signal – from a boat, behind the sail or in the rain it often goes unnoticed. The Binnen Skipper app brings that warning to your phone, covering Lake Chiemsee, Lake Starnberg, the Ammersee, the Tegernsee and the Great Brombachsee. It also offers a nautical chart, wind, water level and temperature, an anchor watch and a man-overboard function. It was built by Titus Hildebrand from Landshut, who has been sailing since childhood. All safety features are free of charge.

Bavaria's lakes are watched over by a warning system older than any smartphone: orange flashing lights on the shore, triggered by the German Weather Service and switched on by the regional emergency control centres. Forty flashes per minute mean strong wind, ninety mean storm; the lights operate from 1 April to 31 October. The catch is as old as the system itself: the light only helps those who see it. Behind the sail, in the rain or on the far shore it goes unnoticed. This is precisely the gap the Binnen Skipper app closes. It reports the state of the lights to your phone – for Lake Chiemsee, Lake Starnberg, the Ammersee, the Tegernsee and the Great Brombachsee. It also offers a nautical chart with harbours, piers and protected zones, wind and weather, water level and temperature, an anchor watch and a man-overboard function. You choose your lake in the app, and everything else follows from that. The app was developed by Titus Hildebrand from Landshut. He has been sailing since childhood, the family boat lies on Lake Chiemsee, and it all began out of his own need: before casting off he had to check five different places every time – weather, water level, water temperature, webcams, wind. What started as a single app for Lake Chiemsee now covers five lakes; that is why it has been called Binnen Skipper since early August 2026. All safety-related features are free of charge and will remain so: chart, storm warning, severe-weather alerts, anchor watch, man overboard and emergency call. An optional Pro version unlocks additional features and currently costs 14.99 euros. The app is available for iPhone and Android. One point matters to the developer: the app complements the official signals, it does not replace them. Anyone on the water remains responsible for keeping an eye on the weather.
